An Overview of Activities for the year 2018


It is my pleasure to present to the Annual General Meeting, the Persatuan Ekonomi Malaysia (PEM) Annual Report for the year ended 31 December 2018.

PEM’s 1st (first) activity or flagship event for the year was the BNM Governor’s Address on the Malaysian Economy & Panel Discussion held on 30 March 2018 at Sasana Kijang, Bank Negara Malaysia (BNM).Kuala Lumpur. As in the previous year, after the release of the 2017 BNM Annual Report and Financial Stability and Payment System Report , the keynote address was given by the Deputy Governor YBhg. Datuk Abdul Rasheed Ghaffour of BNM. The speech focused on key economic areas of the Malaysian economy. Our invited panelists were Ms. Kristina Fong, Head of Research of Ram Rating Services Berhad, Mr. Kenneth Simler, Senior Economist of World Bank, and Mr. Edward Lee, Regional Head of Research, Southeast Asia Standard Chartered Bank of Singapore. The event was attended by more than 200 participants from among leading bankers, government officials, academicians, members of PEM, NGO personnel, corporate leaders, and representatives of foreign missions in Kuala Lumpur.

Subsequent to the Bank Negara Malaysia Governor’s Address in March, PEM had its 55th Annual General Meeting on 30 March 2018 at Sasana Kijang, Bank Negara Malaysia, Kuala Lumpur.

The 2nd (second) special event was the collaboration between PEM and BNM on IMF Global Financial Stability Report (GPSR). It was one of BNM Outreach programme which was held on 15 October 2018 at Sasana Kijang. The presentation mainly reported on the IMF Regional economic Outlook (REO) by Dr. Koshy Mathai, Head of the Regional Studies Division in IMF’s Asia and Pacific Department while IMF Global Financial Stability (GFSR) was presented by Mr. Jochen M. Schmittmann, who is currently based in Singapore, covering Singapore, Malaysia as well as financial market developments across Asia. The response to the event was overwhelming and it received positive feedbacks from participants.

Before end of 2018, our final flagship event was the 2019 Post-Budget Debate : “Book of Hope: Building the Nation, Fulfilling Hopes”. This event was held on 7 November 2018 at TPC Kuala Lumpur, formerly known as KLGCC, Bukit Kiara Kuala Lumpur in conjunction with the announcement of the 2019 Budget by Ministry of Finance. It was the 1st (first) budget presented by the newly appointed Finance Minister, the Honourable YB Lim Guan Eng. The debate was followed by a panel discussion comprising notable experts giving their respective views. The debate was intended to provide further clarification on the measures announced in the budget. The event was a success as it attracted a large number of participants from various sector.
